I am Sarah Cunningham. My journey with Princes began when I was a student at the University of Liverpool and I became one of the first interns at Princes head office in Liverpool. As an undergraduate looking for a work placement while studying at University, Princes seemed like the ideal fit for me. They are an international manufacturer of food and drink, owning and licensing brands as well as supplying supermarket own label products to a large variety of customers. Due to the scope of the organisation and Princes’ stability, I saw Princes as a place for a long-term career.

Having originally started off as an undergraduate working as a Marketing Executive on the Soft Drinks team for 12 months, I then had my placement extended by 3 months and worked as a New Product Development Assistant before going back to University. At the end of my undergraduate placement I was given a conditional offer for the Princes Graduate Scheme; subject to a minimum of a 2:1 and an interview following the completion of my degree. Having achieved a First-Class Honours degree in Business Studies, I was invited to return to Princes on the Graduate Scheme and this is an achievement I am hugely proud of.

Less than four years on, I have progressed to the role of Buying Executive in the fish department. My day to day duties including working closely with Princes’ tuna suppliers to ensure the successful launch of new products, purchasing currency, negotiating pricing and ensuring timely shipments from overseas. Other responsibilities include negotiating and organising contracts, creating delivery and shipment schedules, and also meeting with customers and many other stakeholders.

My biggest professional challenge to date was managing a market-leading project involving internal and external stakeholders. I coordinated cross-functional meetings to achieve key project objectives to ensure the project launched within a fixed timeline. It also required the facilitation of communication between a key customer and a new supplier. One of the things I most enjoy most about my role in Princes is building relationships with suppliers, both overseas and within the UK.

For me, the best thing about working for Princes has been the exposure I have had to numerous product range launches. It has given me the opportunity to communicate directly with customers and added value in external and internal project meetings. I would have no hesitation in recommending Princes to others. I recommended the graduate scheme to one of my close friends and he is now on his first rotation in Buying. Finally, the people at Princes are a pleasure to work with; everyone is approachable and always happy to help.
