I am Gemma Hartley and I have been working for Princes since December 2010. My first role within the company was as a temporary HR assistant within the Shared Service Function. Before working for Princes, I worked as a Customs Officer as part of the Northwest Detection team and so the world of HR was an entirely new career path for me.

I was initially attracted to work for Princes because it is an internationally recognised brand with a fantastic reputation. Furthermore, the head office is situated within the iconic Liver Building on the renowned Pier Head in Liverpool so it is a stunning location to work. Princes also offer multiple opportunities for self-development and growth.

After starting as a temporary HR assistant in 2010, I moved to specialise in recruitment. I was then promoted to HR Officer and oversaw recruitment in the head office. Later I was seconded to the Manchester Manufacturing site where I was responsible for all HR matters for the 208 employees on the site. This was my biggest professional challenge to date because it pushed me out of my comfort zone. Nevertheless, it was a very valuable opportunity which broadened my knowledge and experience of the industry. Today, six years after starting my career at Princes, I have progressed to a HR Manager role; looking after the Finance, IT and Corporate areas of the business.

My day to day duties involve providing HR advice and guidance to line managers and employees. I work with directors and senior managers to implement appropriate business solutions to assist in the efficient running of their individual departments. I am also responsible for general HR issues including recruitment, absence management, talent management and employee relations.

In my professional life, I am most proud of my CIPD qualification which began in 2013. It required a huge amount of self-motivation and determination, plus blood, sweat and tears! I was fully supported by my manager and Princes throughout the process and I was delighted to complete my CIPD in June 2016. This has provided me with a strong theoretical understanding of human resource management and it supports my work as a HR Manager.

I would absolutely recommend working for Princes to other interested parties. There are lots of opportunities available for career development, as well as opportunities to work with talented people across all levels of the business. The people I work with every day and the wider HR team are what makes my job most enjoyable. On the whole, Princes is a great place to work.
