Case Study – Chucks Idunorba – Canning Improvement Manager, Long Sutton and Wisbech
I was brought into Princes in October 2018 in a new role for the company as Canning Improvement Manager.
I support site teams within our food factories to deliver agreed manufacturing vision and strategy through continuous and process improvement by making repeated, incremental and sustainable changes in how things are done. This all helps to deliver improved efficiency, performance and profitability.
On starting my new role, my initial challenge was to build a strong capable team to help to deliver the company’s Lean Improvement Programme, which has now been achieved.
A key focus has been process cost savings and in 2019 we saved the business over £300,000 through process optimisation. In 2020, we are on track to beat that.
Our Long Sutton site, one of the factories I cover, is undergoing a two-year major transformational investment programme called ‘Canning Excellence’ worth over £63 million.
It is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2021 and will deliver a new raw material warehouse and handling facility, ingredients processing centre (IPC), flexible production line, hydrostat cooker, pack line, a new pea plant building, improved pea plant equipment and the implementation of a paperless system called MES.
It also involves the largest mass recruitment that Princes has ever undertaken with the recruitment of 65 full-time colleagues.
My team and I have already started training to ensure that all the new starters are introduced to the concept of lean thinking and to ensure standard ways of working are at the heart of everything they do.
At the start of Covid-19, I put together a cross-functional team across our food canning factories with a responsibility to help keep our colleagues safe and able to come to work. I am incredibly proud that my team were rewarded with a Pride in Princes Award for our good work.
People are at the heart of everything we do and this is a very exciting time for Princes.
“The sky is the limit for Princes and we are geared up for this next journey.”
