Case Study – Adeel Abbas – Manufacturing Manager, Edible Oils Limited
I am currently an apprentice on the Princes Fast Track Developing Leader Programme.
My development has always been important to me and, after attending the Princes internal Leadership Essentials Programme, this qualification felt like the natural next step in my career. It was the first opportunity I had for a formal education in the UK.
Before joining Princes, I achieved my BSC in Food Technology whilst in Pakistan and moved to the UK in 2010. I have now been with Princes for nearly three years. I spent the first two years as a shift manager at our Erith site and, after a structural change, I was given the opportunity to take on my current role as Manufacturing Manager.
The apprenticeship programme has given me a clearer understanding of the importance of communicating with my colleagues. I have improved my leadership skills and have a vision on how to lead and coach my team.
My advice to anyone looking to develop their skills is ensure you discuss with your line manager your development in your PDR’s and if you get the opportunity then go for it.
The skills for life I have taken from the apprenticeship include listening to other peoples advice and ideas, learning not to always focus on the big blocks, understanding that the small blocks are as important and, as a leader, the importance of delegation. You can’t do it all without a good team around you.
